While working for Tableau, one of the biggest projects I had the privilege to work on was the Tableau Conference 2016. 15,000 people traveled from around the world to come to this Annual Conference which was taking place in Austin, TX.
As one of the lead designers on this event, it was my job to create the look and feel of the entire conference. This conference was different than all the others for many reasons. But the most important; This was the largest conference Tableau had ever put on and we (the designers) needed to take advantage of that and build a community. Seeing that there would be so many people there, we didn't want to lose the "personal" touch that Tableau offers to the users. So after many rounds, we settled on the theme, "We are data people".
Heres the manifesto:
"We are Data People
We ask questions. Then we ask more. We tinker and dig—until we know not just what, but also why.
We seek the truth. We back up our decisions with data—but first we’ve turned that same questioning eye to the data itself. Even as we learn about the data, the journey is teaching us something about ourselves. About our creativity. Our focus. Our terrier-like determination to get to the answers—no matter how many late nights and cups of coffee it costs us.
And we’re learning. We’re always learning. Sometimes by ourselves.
But this week, in a community. Our community. The data community."
Once we nailed down the branding and direction, we then had to execute. We worked with vendor's to help create 3-D structures, signage and interactive pieces. We literally worked on this for an entire year. This project was by far the largest I've ever worked on and dare I say, one of the most challenging. But in the end, it was magnificent to see it all come together.
